What Causes Shoulder Pain And Swollen Legs After A Double Bypass Surgery?

My partner had a double by pass in March 2016.He returned to work 3 mnths later. It is 9 mnths down the track, and he is having a lot of pain in his back, shoulders, sometimes he cannot raise his arms above his shoulders. His leg where he had the vein harvested occassionally swells, particlarly the ankle. For the last 5 days the other leg, the good leg has been swollen from the knee down, and his ankle is very swollen also, he says it feels like it is going to burst, and is limping with it, is this from the surgery??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I think he should be urgently seen for two reasons. The swollen limb may be a clot in the leg, and it's very necessary that he is checked for it. It's unlikely to be related to the bypass.

The pain and stiffness in shoulders also need a proper workup. Like checking uric acid, and work up for rheumatological diseases like PMR or rheumatoid arthritis. So it's necessary that he sees his Dr urgently.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Mahboob Ur Rahman , General & Family Physician
