What Causes Shrinkage Of Thyroid Gland And Elevated T4 Level?

I have been hypothyroid for approx. 12 yrs. on Synthroid with no issues to speak of. Approx. 2 months ago started feeling awful - cold all the time, low body temp. and very lethargic. Went to ER when woke gasping for air. Blood work showed T-4 at 16.2. Was told to double dosage of 125mcg 1x a week and remain on normal dose remaining days. Had CT done on neck and now thyroid gland is abormally small . What caused this?

Hello,

This looks like autoimmune disease. The most prevalent type of autoimmune hypothyroidism is a disease that causes the thyroid to shrink, it is called Hashimoto’s disease and may cause Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
