Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a region of skin in my foot (at the lower part of my fibula bone) which is insensitive to touch or pain. I have had the insensitivity for an year. Can it be an early symptom of leprosy? The skin appears thicker than usual (maybe because the region takes most of the weight when i sit with feet folded). I am 20 years old with above average immunity and no one in my family is suffering from the disease. I thought that the insensitivity was due to some injury that i do not remember about.
Skin insensitivity to touch or pain associated with skin thickening may be eczema, dermatitis, early sigh of leprosy or CIPA. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a dermatologist without delay to detect the pathology causing you discomfort. You may need to get skin smears, skin biopsy, blood tests, nasal smears, nerve biopsy done. Your treatment will depend on your clinical condition & reports obtained. No worries, leprosy is completely curable. You will have to take MDT for 6 months or a year if you are tested positive for Mycobacterium leprae or M. lepromatosis.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
