What Causes Sleeplessness And Hot Flashes While On Amlodipine?

I am taking one amlodipine 10mg at 9pm and at nighI have difficulty sleeping due to something like hot flash all over my body and usually take blood presure and it is under control with 150/80 which is much better than before like 170/94. But I want to ask mydoc tommorrow. I am 82 male oriental.

This is not a common side effect of amlodipine but it can occur directly from the vasodilation effect of the drug. You'd think everyone would get this from a vasodilator, but it's actually uncommon. 150 is borderline ok. and under 140 is a bit better BUT a 20% lowering gives MOST of the prevention benefit of blood pressure medicine (you are at about 15%). MOST of my patients who've got those numbers have tried more than 4 other blood pressure medicines and most would not be as happy trying the 5th or 6th and the dose can be slightly increased most of the time and get the BP perfect. On the other hand increasing a dose usually also increases the side effects. Sometimes we just leave things alone.
