What Causes Slight Flare Up Of Lower Rib Cage In Child?

My son is 20 months and his lower rib cage flares slightly. When he lies flat they visibly protrude. He is a well fed child and has daily vitamin supplements as per guidelines and was exclusively breastfed for over 6 months. He is between the 75th and 91st centile for both his weight and height Could this just be him or could there be a medical cause??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I had gone through your query and understand your concern.

Based on your history I'm suspecting some mild form of rib anamoly. There is nothing to worry as it is not causing any kind of respiratory distress. It may subside after few years as your child grows.

Sometimes it possible that some sort of muscular defect may cause such rise in rib cage.

My suggestion is that please wait and watch. If you need to cross verify once please consult a paediatrician who can do physical examination and decide what it is.

Hope this helps.

If you have any other queries I'll be happy to help.

Regards,
Dr.Prathap Kumar
