Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Slight Irritation While Urinating Despite Taking Medications?
My husband recently had surgery for an inguinal hernia. Shortly afterwards he developed a UTI and was treated for 10 days with CIPRO. He still has some slight irritation when urinating, but more important, he just recently pasted what looked liked a piece of dark greyish material that looks like tissue of some sort. There is no blood in the urine, but there are tiny pieces of what seems to be sand-like particles that sink to the bottom of the urine. Please help us to understand what might be going on and advise us what to do. Thank you!

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
The slight irritation he has while urinating with sand like particles settling down in urine seems to be some salt crystals that are formed in urine. These can be either oxalate or phosphate crystals. It needs to be investigated by testing of his urine samples for routine µscopic examination. Once type is confirmed, he may be subjected to X-ray imaging. In order to find size, number and site of such stone / stones.
This would be followed by specific management by an expert radiologist by medications / surgery if the stone is big in size. For home care before he gets appointment with a urologist. He has to drink lot of water (10-12 glasses) in a day. This can drain out miner stones. Over the counter pills of Cystone 2 pills twice a day with glass of water would help.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
