What Causes Slow Bone Development After A Surgery For Fractured Tibia?

Hello, I fractured my tibia and had surgery on 23rd May, I have a plate and screws and was in a cast for 6.5 weeks. I had a follow up appointment on Fri 8th July and the Xray showed the bone growth to be slow, surgeon gave the okay for a walking boot to be fitted but NWB for a further 6 weeks. I am supposed to be flying to Thailand on 13th August for 14 nights. that will be another 5 weeks. My surgeon said I would be good to fly but to be honest I was a bit upset that the bone growth was slow. I am worried about going on holiday, about the flight etc. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

When your surgeon has given you permission & said that you would be good to fly then you can take the trip but be careful. Since you have been detected with slow bone growth, you should be in connection with your treating surgeon. People usually stop feeling the pain & discomfort long before the broken bone has healed & the limb is completely ready for regular normal activity.

Complications or non unions happen when the broken bone lacks adequate stability or blood flow. Avoid injury big or small during your trip as any injury may cause impaired blood supply to the bone. To help faster healing take vitamins & boost your mineral intake. Take protein to provide adequate energy to the body.

Cut on alcohol & smoking, they may reduce the efficiency of the healing process & may interfere with the efficacy of the medicines you have been taking.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
