What Causes Small Dent At The Back Of Head In Infants?
Hello, my daughter is 4 months old (17.5 weeks) and there is a small dent on the back of her head. It is right where the posterior soft spot should be, but I thought that should be closed by now.... Is it normal for there to be a dent where those bones meet?
Hello! Thank you for asking Healthcaremagic! I undertsand your concern dear! Brief answer: It is normal. Detailed answer: Your baby is fine. In newborns the skull isn't completely closed. The skull is held together by soft fibrous membranes that in time will harden. The soft membranes are what causes the dent in your babies head. Newborns have two areas on their head, known as soft spots or fontanels: - anterior fontanel persists until about 18 months -posterior fontanel that is smaller and disappears between 2 and 6 months.
