What Causes Small Painful Bump On Left Knee Cap?

i have a small bump on my left knee cap and it causes shooting pain when i stand after sitting for a period of time. it also hurts at times when i'm just sitting and no weight is being applied to my knee. It doesn't hurt when i touch it though. what could this be?
