What Causes Sore Area Between Buttocks?

My father has a sore area between his butt cheeks. One area is between the legs I believe is a friction burn, He he s excessive swelling in his lower half as he embarks on dialysis and they start to remove this excess fluid. The area is red and sore, Not really a pressure sore, may be fungal.. how can I be sure what to treat? Will an anti fungal hurt?
