Hello,

The following are few probable causes of genital sores in a child:
1) Epstein barr virus
2) Coxsackie virus
3) Herpes simplex virus
4) Varicella zoster virus

Treatment depends upon the cause:
1) Topical steroid creams may be given reduce the inflammation
2) Local anesthetic creams help in reducing the pain
3) Antiviral drugs are to be given depending upon the organism

As they are already in the hospital and tests are going on, you don't need to be apprehended. Best care would be taken of your granddaughter.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
