What Causes Sore Throat Along With Swelling In The Face?
My Dr thinks I have the mumps I m 64 I ve been home since a surgery one month ago now 1 side of my face is swollen a long the jawline. It started with a sore throat and my teeth were sensitive but not painful. Now my whole body hurts but biggest is where s its swollen! Slight ear ache or nerves shooting some pain down toward lower jaw. Pulsating pain & numbness in the swollen area. Can my Dr run any tests to determine if its mumps?
It seems you are having acute parotiditis (likley bacterial) on one side following a sore throat.
However mumps now frequently occurs in older age. Laboratory diagnosis of MUMPS is primarily based on detection of viral RNA by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or on serology.
Buccal swabs appear to be the best specimens for virus detection, particularly when obtained within 2 days of clinical onset.
However, mumps virus can also be detected readily in throat swabs and saliva.
A serologic diagnosis of mumps is typically made by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
At present, the capacity of RNA or viral antigen detection to confirm Mumps cases is much greater than that of serologic testing.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
