What Causes Sore Throat, Enlarged Tonsils And Fever?

I've had a very sore throat enlarged tonsils and a fever on and off for 10 days now. I also have pink eye. I'm on amoxicillin 875 2x/day but my symptoms have not improved at all and now I've also developed lower back pain.... I've already lost 9 lbs and feel miserable every day. Strep was negative. Any thoughts?

Hi dear ,

The symptoms you mention in query like sore throat , enlarged tonsils and fever indicates sever infection , As per your query you have already taking antibiotic (amoxicillin) and and do not get rid of the symptoms , which clearly means that the infection is not caused by bacteria and its probably due to virus . This is also shown by negative strep test . I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist again for proper examination . Doctor may order throat swab test , viral culture test and blood test to confirm the diagnosis . Doctor may prescribe anti viral medicine like acyclovir and decongestants . For now do warm saline gargles several times a days , take steam twice a day and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and swelling .
