Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Sore Tongue After Suffering From Dry Cough And Cold?
I have had a dry cough for 10 days now and cold like symptoms, sinusitis etc. For the past 3 days my tongue has been sore right at the back when I move it a certain way. It seems to be getting worse each day and today hurts to even eat. It feels almost like my tongue is strained if that makes sense. Do you know what this could be?
From what you have detailed, it sounds like a throat infection which has developed with your 10 day cough and cold. It could be pharyngitis. The pain from pharyngitis can be felt as if it were from the back of the tongue and you will have difficulty to chew and swallow food. The same pain can also be caused by an ulcer in your tongue. Oral apthous ulcers in the back of the tongue cannot be seen by you on regular examination. It is an extremely painful condition. Either way you have to do warm saline gargle 3 times a day at home. If it is cough with sinusitis and pharyngitis you will need antibiotics to clear the infection. In that case you need a doctors prescription. Start the warm saline gargle at least 3 times a day, do steam inhalation 3 times a day and take B complex vitamins with zinc supplements for one week. If your condition does not improve or it worsens please consult again or see your doctor. Take care and have a nice day.
