Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking pantoprazole 40mg for 4 months and then changed to omeprazole 40 mg for the last month- in the last month I've developed sore tip of the tongue with the papillae missing from it. Could it be caused by omeprazole ? Do all PPIs cause it ? I've never had this problem in my life ( I'm 64) and it has now suddenly appeared and persisting for a month. It is a reaction to medication or anaemia or low vit. B. Thank you for you help.
I have gone through your query & can understanding your concern. Sore tongue while on Omeprazole can be due to many reasons. First can be acid reflux back in throat (seen in GERD patients) can loss of tongue papillae. This might have arisen as omeprazole is less effective than Pantoprazole in reducing acid production in stomach. Second reason might be allergy to omeprazole & third might be some nutritional deficency causing loss of pappilae.
As per my opinion, you should stop taking omeprazole & start taking pantoprazole 40mg empty stomach in morning. Also you should take a multivitamin like becosule capsules once daily for 10 days.
Visit a physician, if problem persist Hope your cquery has been solved. Good luck
