Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Soreness And Congestion In The Throat?
I am a 47 year old woman and have recently been diagnosed with HPV+CIN1 of the cervix and have been told it should go away on its own, although my mum died of cervical cancer due to neglecting her smear tests. Occasionally I will have a sore throat sensation around my right tonsil area and continually feel like I have mucus in my throat which I try to swallow as nothing to cough up, despite trying to clear. I have tachycardia which I am treated with a beta blocker. I am a smoker and spent 20years consuming excess alcohol but no longer drink. My teeth and gums are in poor condition. Should I ask my GP to check for throat cancer?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Smoking is a risk for oral squamous cell cancer. Checking for oral or throat cancer is recommended if you have any of the following conditions: flat patches, ulcers, lesion that does not heal for a long time or bleed, if you have jaw or mouth pain, or any enlarged of lymph nodes, swells, lumps in you neck area. Most common cause for urge to clear throat is irritating effect of smoke to vocal cords. It is common in smokers and not dangerous. But the cause should be determined before concluding it a benign condition. You should consult with your doctor and get it checked.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
