What Causes Soreness And Hard Lump In Hand At The Site Of IV?
I had gallbladder removal 2/12. Site if iv in my hand has been very sore but at the site where the iv was inserted until today, there is now a small hard lump in the vein about an inch from the iv scab, higher in my hand toward the wrist. It is painful to touch. Do I need to see my physician or is this normal after an iv in the hand? I am 58 yo female no known medical issues and have never had a reaction to an iv in the hand (soreness/pain) lasting this long
Dear Ma'am, Hi & Welcome to HCM. The hard and painful lump on the course of the vein following the IV therapy starting from the site of IV insertion appears to be due to inflamed veins with clot ('thrombophlebitis'). It occurs quite commonly after the insertion of intravenous catheters or canulas. I would advise you to take oral anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen for pain and local application of heat. You can also use Thrombophob (Heparin) gel 2 to 3 times daily which helps in dissolving the small blood clots and improves the blood supply. If the condition worsens, especially if pain or the area of redness increases, then you should consult your physician. Hope the suggestions given above would be useful. A feed back is appreciated.
