What Causes Soreness And Itching Around A Shingles Vaccination Site?

Two weeks ago, I received the Shingles vaccine. I never had Chicken Pox as A child. For the past week, the area where I got the shot has been very sore, itching with raised welts. Could now be developing shingles fro the vaccine, since it does include live virus?

Hello dear. Welcome to HealthCareMagic. Thank you for trusting us. I have understood your questions.

Shingles or varicella virus vaccine live can cause adverse effects such as swelling, red, pruritus or itching, skin rash on the injection site. It happen among > 20% patients. Beside that it also can cause fever in 15% cases. I think it's not the infection of the virus, it just a reaction that the live virus has make an antibody to the virus. You can do some cold compress to reduce the swelling and itching.

You should be aware of:
1. Avoid contact with high risk individual who suffered shingles, up to 5 weeks after vaccination.
2. Contact your local doctor if there are muscles weakness, blurred vision, or syncope.
3. Avoid using salycilate drugs at least 6 weeks after vaccination since it may increase the risk of Reye's syndrome.

I hope this can help to solve your concerns. If there's anything else you want to discuss, please let me know and you can ask anytime in HealthCareMagic. I hope you'll get well soon. Take care.

Regards,
dr. Asti Yuliadha
