What Causes Soreness Behind The Left Knee And Swelling On The Ankle?

I recently developed a soreness behind my left knee, and at the end of the day s work, i show some ankle swelling on my left ankle. I am 66yrs old and still work full time doing Marine electronics repair , which is moderately physical work. Certainly requiring physical flexibility. sometimes this discomfort feels like a muscle/tendon pull/strain.

Diabetologist 's  Response
Hi,

The 2 most common conditions that cause these symptoms are:
1. Osteoarthritis of the knee.
2. Baker's cyst.

I would recommend testing an X-ray of the knee along with an ultrasound of the knee, to test the osteoarthritis and the Baker's cyst, respectively. At the age of 66 years, some changes suggestive of osteoarthritis are very likely in any case.

Therefore, I would suggest an ultrasound more importantly to rule out a Baker's cyst. The treatment includes disease modifying drugs like Glucosamine for Osteoarthritis. On the other hand it may need aspiration of the cyst and/or steroid therapy for Baker's cyst.

So it is imperative that the imaging is done so that an appropriate treatment can be suggested as per the final diagnosis. I have tried to make it as simple as possible. Feel free to ask a follow up query if you need more details.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
