Starting about 2 months ago my fingers and my big toe have been getting sore, especially my left ring finger. It s the worst at night sleeping and when I wake up. Then it pretty much goes away. The left big toe gets sore when I run a lot or play basketball. I m acitive and 56.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Soreness of the toes & fingers commonly occurs due to Rheumatoid Arthritis/OA, Gout. You are suggested to visit ER, get physically examined, get CRP, anti-CCP, ESR, Joint fluid tests, Blood tests for uric acid, X-Ray (Joints), USG done.

Your treatment will depend upon the severity of the pathology detected.

In the meantime do regular exercises(walking, biking, knitting), avoid food containing high purine content. Maintain a healthy weight as per BMI.

Sometimes soreness of fingers & toes occurs due to Dactylitis (PSA), an immune system disorder.

Medications like NSAIDs, corticosteroids effectively reduce the discomfort. Take medications under your local treating doctor & go for follow up treatments as well.

Physiotherapy is effective, stay away from anxiety, stress & tensions. Get treated at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
