What Causes Soreness In The Legs And Hips After Doing Yoga?

I was warmed up at the end of my yoga sess, decided to try a front split. I went all the way down and it something in my hip area in the leg in front popped. Super sore today when I bend over to touch my toes. What happened? What can I do to help it? Can I maintain my workouts and other physical activites?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In all probability, while doing yoga, and front split, you have overstretched the ligaments and tendons around the hip joint and possibly the knee and legs. Depending on the degree of ligament and tendon damage, the healing would occur.

If it is only a mild injury, 2 to 3 weeks of complete rest to the lower limbs is required. However, if discomfort persists, even after 3 weeks, you will have to rest the lower limbs for more days, till complete healing of the injured ligaments and tendons.

The foundation of the treatment is rest to the injured part. Infra-red light therapy can relax the muscles and help relieve pain and discomfort.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ajit Kumar Varma
