What Causes Soreness In The Neck Muscles?

I have a muscle running to the base of my skull on the right side about 3 finger widths from my ear which is in spacism or very sore all the time. I know I have a problem between C5&C6 but this is really bothersome. I try stretching it an massaging it but it doesn t seem to help.
