Hi, 6 year old son is complaining of sore roof of mouth.
We were at the doctor on thu night and he said it was an allergy but didn't see an infection in his mouth. He said to take zirtek. He is also asthmatic so we are continuing obviously with inhalers.
Thanks in advance

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . The symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as cold sores . They sometimes do not show symptoms . That is why your son do not have symptoms and zyrtec is not helping .

Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus . The infection is trigger by low immunity , stress , sun exposure or recent viral infection.

I would suggest you to :-

- Apply orabase ointment or gel on sores for pain relief.

- Drink cold water .

- Do betadine gargles.

Consult oral pathologist for proper diagnosis and rule out causes like canker sore . Doctor may prescribe anti viral drug like valacyclovir or famciclovir.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
