What Causes Soreness On The Penile Head?

Hi, My boyfriend is complaining of a sore area on the left side on the head of his penis. There is no redness or discolouration, no swelling or any other signs of a problem. It is only sore to touch when it is flaccid and not when his penis is erect. The pain when touched feels like poking a bruise.
