What Causes Soreness, Swelling And Pain In Left Ankle?

Very sore left ankle that s been hurting about 10 days. There is swelling, pain (especially lately on the top of the foot near the connection with the leg bone), tenderness and weakness. Pain has been getting worse. Ice doesn t seem to help. Heat makes it worse. Don t remember injuring it, but I do a lot of walking. Should I have it checked out or wait?

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Swelling and pain in ankle joint is most likely to be due to injury. Spontaneous pain and swelling is not likely to occur. I suggest you to consult your orthopedician for clinical assessment and radiological investigation like X-ray of ankle joint. Since the pain is not very severe, soft tissue injury is expected. Management will depend on the underlying cause of pain and swelling.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
