Hello
Spina bifida is a birth defect most often caused by a deficiency of folic acid.
There are different varieties of spina bifida , some are readily visible while other variety is spina bifida occulta, which is not visible.
The best way to confirm is MRI of the spine.
Also you should take precaution when planning next pregnancy. The mother should take folic acid supplementation daily to avoid any such defect in subsequent pregnancy.
I hope this answers your query.
