What Causes Sporadic Pain In The Buttock?

I have a pain in my right thigh, almost in the buttock area. I have had it off and on for about a month and it is getting worse. Seems to hurt when I put pressure on my leg, such as taking a long stride. Not all the time, but enough to concern me. I am not aure if it may be in the joint. I am an otherwise very healthy 62 year old female. I walk 2 miles 5 times a week and I swim.
