What Causes Sporadic Pain Under The Rib Cage Radiating To Lower Back?
Hello. I ve been having intermittent side pains on my left side under my rib cage. It intensifies when I grab something with my right hand. It now has grown to my lower back and I ve had a headache for the last week with it. Today was the worst with pain- nothing like a pain 10 but very uncomfortable. I had a bowel movement today and had blood in it. I honestly thought I had started my period. I don t know if I should wait until I can see my regular physician next week or go to the emergency room tonight.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have sporadic pain under the rib cage radiating to lower back . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like indigestion acid reflux , kidney stones , pancreatitis , rib damage or gallstones. The symptoms can also occur due to heart condition like angina, so also consult cardiologist. I would suggest you to eat light and non spicy , eat small and frequent meals and eat at least one hour before going to bed . Also take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain . If condition doesn't get well then consult gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor may order ultrasound along with other test and physical examination . Doctor may refer you to orthopedic surgeon for rib damage or back pain .
Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
