What Causes Spotting And Vaginal Bleeding Post Menopause?
Thought I had pretty much completed menopause; but have had a few small weird periods that caused some spotting off and on the last 5 months. However, last night, I got serious cramps and have discarded a number of clots vaginally for about 16-18 hours. Symptoms seem to be subsiding... but it seems strange.
Hello and welcome to HCM, On and off vaginal bleeding can be experienced within few months of onset of menopause. Vaginal bleeding six months after cessation of bleeding is alarming and needs to be investigated. An ultrasound of the pelvic organs need to be done to look for any growth in the uterine cavity or any other organ of the reproductive tract. Endometrial thickening or endometrial growth is the most common cause of post-menopausal bleeding. In addition, an endometrial biopsy also needs to be done to assess the status of endometrial glands and stroma. If any abnormal growth is detected on biopsy, surgical excision of the uterus needs to be done. If no abnormality is detected, follow up will be required.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
