What Causes Stabbing Pain Near The Heart During Pregnancy?

Hello, 35 weeks pregnant have had continous coughing/trouble breathing last few weeks. Given Z-pack, which I've completed. Over last few days, experiencing very sharp pain near heart. Sharp pain comes/goes with no known onset. Stabbing pain for few moments then goes away and then returns. It is not a heartburn feeling. What could this be--I have heard that some women experience heart issues towards end of pregnancy--is this normal?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Just because you are having pain on the left side of your chest does not mean it is from your heart. Yes- women can develop heart disease during pregnancy, but given your recent diagnosis of a lung problem, I am concerned about this pain and I suggest you seek hospital care immediately. You may just have bronchitis or pneumonia, but a blood clot in the lung, called a pulmonary embolism, can be deadly if it is untreated and they can test for that in a hospital. They can also make sure you do not have a problem with your heart.

So I suggest, even if you do not currently have the pain, that you go to the hospital to be evaluated. The problem may be something simple, but it is important to rule out anything that can seriously hurt you or the baby.

I hope you seek medical care as I advise and best wishes for your health and that of your pregnancy,

Sincerely, Dr. Brown
