What Causes Sticky Stool While On Mercaptopurine?

Hi I am 66 year old male diagnosed with Crohns 4 years ago I take a maintenance dose of mercaptopurine each day and symptoms are quite well controlled. However, I do have messy stools which are difficult to clean. Is this related to Crohns or maintenance drugs (mercaptopurine)

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* The sticky stools are in relation with partial malabsorption through Crohn`s disease while on maintenance therapy with mercaptopurine. My guidelines at present

- plenty of liquids to help digestion process

- increase intake of fiber in diet like bran and Psyllium

- bulk forming laxative as Ispaghula

- regular walking, exercises
- prescription of pre and pro biotics to help restore intestine flora
- stool microscopy report to rule out any residual infection of previous inflammation episode.

- consideration of antibiotics for a short duration of time is consultant
choice as per the case demand.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
