What Causes Stiff Neck While Suffering From Shingles?

Hello, Yesterday my husband was diagnosed with Shingles (Hunts Syndrome), likely due to suppressed immune system following a stent insertion from a large kidney stone. My concern is that he cannot rotate his neck at all. Is a stiff neck usually a symptom of Shingles? He says it feels like a large lump on the left side of his neck, the same side as his outbreak. I look forward to your thoughts. Thank you very much!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It can occur due to problems of the cervical spine. It is called cervicogenic vertigo. It is caused by compression of the vestibular artery. Neck pain, feeling of imbalance and pain in the neck in lying down position are some of the common symptoms of cervicogenic vertigo. It is usually caused by injuries of the cervical spine like whiplash injuries.
Please see an Orthopedician for the relevant investigations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
