What Causes Stiff Swollen Joints In The Big Toe After An Injury?

I stumped my foot several weeks ago and now I have been having pain, stiffness and swelling in the joint connected to my big toe. If I walk a lot it is very tender. Could I have broken a bone? I can walk fine but if I over due it the pain increases.
