What Causes Stiffness And Intense Pain In The Neck?
I woke up yesterday morning with a very stiff and painful neck. I couldn t tilt my head back or from side to side. I assumeI slept on it wrong. Throughout the day it has gotten worse. I cannot sleep, it hurts to swallow and it is giving me headache. The pain is located across the base of my skull. I am also experiencing spasms. Any suggestions on what I can do? I am doing the basics right now.
This seems like a muscular related check pain and stiffness. You will need to use ibuprofen 600 mg every 6 hours after food and paracetamol 500 mg every 6 hours (together with ibuprofen) to help with the pain. You can also use local warm compresses on the neck to help the muscles relax. You can apply them for 15-20 minutes a few times a day. Massage and exercises should be done under the instruction of a physiotherapist as these can make you worse if done in the wrong way.
I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General and Family Physician
