What Causes Stiffness And Swelling Of Neck?

Mid morning I felt like I had a stiff neck (didn t wake up that way) and I kept feeling pinches . The pain was in the back of my neck and radiates down my arms. When I reached back to massage my neck I noticed that my back had loads of swelling. It s not red but it s definitely feels like there are gel backs under my skin. What could cause that?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thanks for writing.

I can understand your concern and would try to help you in the best way possible. The problem you are facing may be due to various reasons like a cervical spondylosis, neck muscle spasm or rheumatoid arthritis. You may require a complete physical examination and few tests like a X ray, complete blood test with ESR, Serum calcium and RF assay and may be biopsy of your swelling. I would suggest you may consult a doctor who would investigate you and formulate a management plan for you.
In the mean time you may take adequate rest, apply cold packs to relieve your pain.
