What Causes Stiffness Around Knee Area?

I have stiffness around the knee after sitting for a period of time. The area is lateral and may be in the area of the meniscus. I know it would be difficult to advise without a MRI, but I wanted to know your thoughts or suggestions. This has started recently and I am 59 years old, very active- weight training, cardio-walking 4 to 5 miles a day, I do not drink alcohol, or smoke anything. What do you think?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Since you are so much active like walking 4 to 5 miles, the cause may be related to the lateral ligaments or so. Internal injury to the meniscus can not allow to exercise.
Hence I would advise you the following:
First of all get a self examination done by putting pressure on the said area and see for any tenderness, swelling and so on.
Consult your Orthopedic Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation and thus get further investigations as would be suggested.
Use proper knee support.
Do not sit for long.
Do not do any activity that causes twisting of knee joint.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
