What Causes Stiffness In Neck Along With Headaches In The Mornings?

I wake up with stiff neck and headache all over the head and in between my eye brows, I do have TMJ and have a night guard. I was diagnosed with tension headaches but was on noritryptylan and it made me gain weight so I stopped it. I don t have allergies but a few weeds and trees and the nasocort and zyrtec do not make me feel any better, feels like a band of pain all over the head and the neck pain with it. I don t have watery eyes or sneezing problems or a runny nose, I m usually stuffed up instead. I have some arthritis in the neck that showed up in a xray . I can t take any ibropophen because of my gastritis. I take tylenol twice daily (2) each time. I had my eyes checked recently and will get new glasses, it wasn t off by much though like a quarter in change I think she said. Stiff neck and headache among waking is making me feel depressed, can you help? My Name is Shar

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Stiffness in the neck is commonly caused by sleeping without proper support, poor sleeping posture, OA, RA, muscle strain, etc. You have history of having arthritis in the neck, arthritis may trigger cervicogenic headache. Pain may also spread to the forehead, temple, area around the eyes and / or ears. This type of headache is caused due to an underlying disc, joint, muscle, or nerve disorder in the neck.

You are suggested to get clinically assessed and treated at the earliest. You may need a cervical collar, physical or heat therapy. Avoid refined carbs, sugars, fried or processed food. Cut on tobacco, alcohol or addictions if any. You can take acetaminophen for relieve from pain. Take antacids along with it to avoid acid reflux.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
