What Causes Stiffness In The Fingers And Weakness In The Hand?

Yes. Thank you. My middle finger and pinky finger on my right hand are almost constantly stiff, and the middle joint knuckles stick a lot. There is moderate difficulty in straightening out my fingers after making a fist, and there is a weakness of grip and loss of strength in the hand. this began about 2-3 months ago, and has gradually gotten worse. What are the possible causes, and what kind of doctor should I see?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You seem to have compression of ulnar nerve supplying the fingers you say at wrist (carpel tunnel) / elbow (ulnar bone notch) / neck (cervical rib) or cervical spine (spondylitis).

This compression causes impaired nerve supply to muscles of the fingers &give you these symptoms. You need imaging investigations to pin point the spot followed by cause specific management (medications, physiotherapy or surgery in few cases). Please consult an orthopedic neurosurgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
