Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, my son is 10yrs oldhas thalassemia blood trait and I wanted to know can he have symptoms of sickle cell. He complains of stomach aches like three times out of the week and one time he had an epsisode where his arms and back wa hurting to the point he could not move, I took him to emergency and to his doctor and they just said it was his muscles but he doesn’t play heavy sports just basketball around the house.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Sickle cell can be there with thalesimia. However, it is not very common to have both. The pain you described is unlikely to be because of the sickle cell crises.
In Sickle cell, theere is severe (more localized) pain but unlikely to involve the back. The pain can rightly be a muscular one as that does not always need heavy sports. Muscle spasms can occur with lighter activities also.
Regarding the stomach pain that would need a bit more details like if it can be any ulcer. But, I would advise such patients to get an ultrasound scan done to rule out gall stones which a bit common in such patients.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
