My dad is 70 years old. He was up all night with severe gas pains and he did vomit blood. He says about a half cup of just blood. He does smoke and drink beer. He is unable to drink his coffee today and has diarea as well. No other blood since he vomited last night. Should we get him in ASAP or wait longer to see if symptoms d crease
Dear- thanks for using HCM for your medical questions. I understand that you are very worried about your father and it is important to take care of him as soon as possible. First of all, he has risk factor for gastric or duodenal ulcer. He is a smoker , who drinks and is older. This episode of gas pain and vomit with blood makes me think that we are in the presence of an acute gastritis or ulcer. He needs to go to the hospital for an evaluation and endoscopic view of the stomach. It is imperative to do that before he continues bleeding and can complicate with a drop in hemoglobin . Gastrointestinal bleeding should not wait. I hope that my advise has been helpful.Feel free to contact me for any medical advise. Dr.Sara
