What Causes Stomach Infection And Black Bowel Movement?

I have had the stomache virus that s going around for the last 4 days. I am starting to feel better, but was worried, when earlier today, I had a disturbing bowel movement. It came on pretty suddenly, but the color is what disturbed me...it was black. I m thinking, that can t be good, even though I am feeling better.? What does that dark color mean usually?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The black bowel movement usually means that there is a hemorrhage in the upper gastrointestinal tract. I suggest you to consult a gastrologist as soon as possible for an endoscopy. You should also do a stool test and a complete blood count for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
