What Causes Stomach Pain In An Infant While On Formula And Breast Milk?
My daughter is just 2 months and I practice mixed feeding. Both formula and breastfeeding. At the same time. But she experience stomach. Pain whenever. Am breastfeeding. Her jus after she drunk formula . What my might be the problem ?and what must I do?
Formula milk contains a different combination of the essential nutrients and is difficult to digest than breast milk - hence the colicky pain. The stools may also change in consistency and may give rise to pain on passing stools and fissures. Breast milk gets digested completely any a times as evidenced by the infrequent stools some babies get.
If there is no particular indication for mixed feeding, I woould advise you to continue breast feeding directly or indirectly after expressing, if you are unable to be physically present with your baby entire day. Breast milk can be stored in the refridgerator in the freezer compartment for 3-6 weeks and in the outside compartment for 16-24 hours. It can simply be warmed to normal temperature and given. Donot boil it.
If there are contraindications to your direct feeding, I would suggest you try some good formulations like Enfamil and Similac. These have a variety of formulas with different concentrations of nutrients.
If you are unable to find the above brands in your place of residence, I suggest you review the concentration in which you are preparing the formul feed. Many a times, I have observed it to be made too concentrated. Please followthe instructions given on the pack. If you are already making it properly, consider diluting it slightly by adding more water. Once your baby gets used to the formula, you can slowly make it to the appropriate concentration.
Hope this helps.
Regards, Dr Geeta
