What Causes Stomach Pain While Taking Hydrochlorothiazide For BP?

My mother, who will soon be 85 suffers from high blood pressure. She currently takes minoxidil, norvasc, nadalol, and when the pressure goes above 160(top number) she takes a clonidine, which usually drops her pressure in an hour, some times 100 points. Recently added hydroclorthizide. Pressure still goes up but she now has an ongoing stomach. Any suggestions? She has also had a brain bleed in the back of her head. No long lasting noticeable effects. Ric

Hello,

The following are few adverse effects related to Hydrochlorothiazide
1) Hypercalcemia
2) Nausea
3) Epigastric pain
4) Hyperuricemia
5) Hypokalemia
6) Vomiting

So, as such abdominal pain is a rare side effect and it may be due to gastric irritation leading to epigastric pain. You may try the following:
1) Take tab. Pantoprazole 40mg once daily before food
2) Take tab. Cyclopsam once daily for 3 days.

If her pain doesn't subside, you may need to consult a gastroenterologist for further evaluation like ultrasound imaging abdomen.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
