What Causes Stomachache And Diarrhea After Small Bowel Resection?
Hi,,in 2009 I had a severe bowl obstruction and had 6 feet of small intestine removed. 2 yrs following I was in and out of hosp for small obstructions. I have been fine for over 2 yrs now.About 3 weeks ago the severe stomach pain started and diahera. I m putting off going to the ER,is there a chance it can heal on its own?
Brief answer: Short bowel syndrome causes long-term (chronic) diarrhea but you need to get checked up to exclude any surgical emergency.
Explanation: My opinion is that in small bowel resection cases. Patient’s residual intestine cannot absorb all the nutrients and digest all remaining foods. Also malabsorption of bile salts that is secreted by gall bladder also leads to chronic diarrhea. But if acute abdominal pain, vomiting or absolute constipation developed, you would better get yourself checked of course to rule out any emergencies. Most of short bowel syndrome complications are related to chronic malabsorption.
I suggest my patients the following: Follow-up your nutritional status with a specialist. Do some labs as CBC, CRP, albumin level and electrolytes to check for malnutrition. The information provided by you is not sufficient to provide a good opinion. If someone comes to me with this condition I would ask them about other diseases like diabetes, hypertension also symptoms or signs of gastritis or peptic ulcer.
Conclusion: I suggest you check for emergencies if developed any red alarm symptoms or signs mentioned above, check your nutritional status.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mahmmad Gamal
