Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Strange Smelling Urine In An Elderly Person?
My 74 year old father has recently been experiencing a very strong and foul smell with his urine. He had a stroke twenty years ago, has had diabetes for about 20 years and just a year ago his bladder stopped working and he is on a catheter now. What could be causing this bad smell?
I believe it is a UTI followed by the ID catheter. You need to change his catheter and go for a USG (abdomen and pelvis) and a Urine examination (routine and microscopic) and CBC to rule out UTI and its cause.
You can give him a prophylactic dose of Levofloxacin OD once in a day for 7 days.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Naira Jahangir, OB and GYN Specialist
