What Causes Sudden And Drastic Weight Gain?

My son is 33years old and has over a hundred pound weight gain in less than 6 months. We live way out in the country. His local doctor advised him that his liver function was not normal and his thyroid was not quite normal, but did not recommend an Ear Nose and Throat doctor? he weighs 280 lbs. and his normal weight was 140 lbs. he is 5ft. 7 in. tall. He actually gained over 100 lbs. in one month. I carried him to my cardiologist, where he had to have a heart stent. I used to go to the same firm years ago and was misdiagnosed also. My wife and I feel he may have Hypothyroidism? His condition is getting much worse. My wife has an excellent Ear nose and throat doctor if we can get an appointment? I just checked and his heart rate is 104/min and his o2 stat is 97. His current doctor thought he might have the beginnings of COPD?

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

After going through your question, I can understand your concern.

Such a drastic weight gain requires immediate evaluation.

Hormonal imbalances (hypothyroidism is one of it) is most likely cause for it, though other causes should be evaluated.

I would like to advise you to consult Endocrinologist for detailed clinical evaluation.

He requires evaluation for cause and effect of obesity.
Following investigations may help in management-
1) Thyroid function test and other hormonal assays as required after consultation with endocrinologist.
2) Complete blood count.
3) Kidney and Liver function test.
4) Urine examination.
5) Serum Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin B12 & D3.
6) Ultrasonography of abdomen and pelvis.
7) ECG and 2DEcho of heart.
8) Chest xray.
9) Sleep study and Pulmonary function test.

Dietary modification and regular exercise after consultation with doctor may help along with treatment of underlying cause and complications of obesity.

Hope this helps you, if so do vote as helpful.
