What Causes Sudden And Severe Pain In Back, Shoulder Blades And Spine?

My wife awakened about 45 mins ago with severe pain in her back, even with her shoulder blades, and centered on her spine. Pulse, respiration and BP are normal. The pain comes in waves and it feels like a spasm. I gave her three aspirin to chew and swallow, immediately. She is on a heating pad now and appears to be getting some relief. She is 50 yoa, and has a sedentary lifestyle. No history of coronary issues.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Seems that the pain your wife is having on the spine and shoulder blade is muscular skeletal. As she is conducting a sedentary life, and no history of cardiovascular issues, then, she might have been stretching the muscles or possible bad positioning while awaking.

Keep applying warm pads, and analgesic cream locally.
Take oral analgesic.
Light exercises to move the spine muscles can be of help.

All the best.
