Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i experience a blackout on the weekend, where I have no recollections of a time period where I continued to function had conversations with people and I can not remember even speaking with them, when I was conscious again I was very thirsty and spaced out so took me a while to regain my self and feel safe. I suffer migraine and afterwards had some symptoms I have with migraine. I took magnesium and drunk lots of water. I was working outside at the time this happened. My friends noticed I was a bit strange they noted I couldn t remember my neighbours names. I m a bit freaked out by this experience.
There are mainly three causes for a person to lose consciousness for a short while and recover on its own:
1. Transient ischemic attack- in this case, the blood supply to the brain is reduced for a while in a person with risk factors such as diabetes, high BP, high cholesterol, etc.
2. Syncope- in this condition, a person loses consciousness for a short while due to cardiac or vasovagal syncope. However, recovery is complete within XXXXXXX than one minute. Since your brother sometimes takes much longer, this also is unlikely.
3. Seizures (epilepsy)- In this condition, a person may lose consciousness without any warning and it may last from a few minutes to hours. This can happen at any age.
Investigations helpful are MRI brain and EEG. I am sure they may have been done.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
