What Causes Sudden Breathing Difficulty While Sleeping?
When I sit in my recliner and try to nap, I find that just as I relax to the point of sleep It is like something blocks my air way causing me to wake up by puffing air out of my mouth! I usually am a nose breather but it seems I need to breath with my mouth now. If I sleep on my side I don t have this problem. What could be causing this? Thank you
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The symptoms you are experiencing are concerning for possible sleep apnea. Another important consideration is cardiac issues which can present with breathing difficulty while lying down. An EGG, echocardiography, chest X-ray, thyroid function test and sleep study are recommended at this point. So please be advised to follow up with your primary care provider.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
