What Causes Sudden Breathlessness In The Mornings While Having COPD?

I have copd and have had it for over 30 years without the need of medication. In 2014 following the death of my husband of 50 years I suddenly had severe s.o.b. I was given ventolin a d clenyl modulite. Neither which made mu h difference. My main concern is why, when I first sit up in bed in the morning do I struggle to breath for about 20 minutes. Thank you

Hi,

Thank you for your question. COPD is blockage of the air ways of the lungs and this may be made worse by sleeping especially if you sleep on one side for long time. On waking you will suddenly have difficult in breathing which may improve as the day progresses.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mutuma Geoffrey Zambezi
